Xbox HD DVDA rumor burst out earlier this week about Microsoft’s forthcoming Xbox 360, which plays HD DVD format Games. The rumor exploded when Microsoft Game Studios general manager Dave Luehmann, told Consumer Electronics Daily about Xbox 360’s HD DVD game player. However, Microsoft is not planning on it.

On his Gamerscore blog, John Porcaro, Microsoft’s group manager of online marketing communications clarified that:

I am seeing lots of speculation about our upcoming HD-DVD Player, and whether we have plans to publish HD-DVD games. The answer is no.
At this point, we have not seen anything to suggest that next-gen DVD formats offer a better game experience than current DVD. What we do know is that these formats will bring added cost to game developers, disc manufacturing, and could even result in added costs and longer load times for the consumer, which would negatively affect the game experience.

Publicizing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006 he stated that it is designed for playing HD DVD movies and not playing games on HD DVD. The company also stated that next-gen DVD formats are not necessary for good gaming experiences and would only increase costs.

Obviously, Sony deviates from Microsoft’s statement. PlayStation 3’s manufacturer Sony argues it will create more complicated and expansive worlds, which will require larger capacity storage mediums. Anyway, all Xbox 360 freaks can just enjoy movies on it, at least for now.
